Peter Schuster is an established Australian artist with a recognised exhibition history, award record and a longstanding presence in regional and metropolitan art markets. His work is distinguished by a deeply personal interpretation of the Australian landscape, an enduring commitment to traditional painting techniques and the development of a distinctive contemporary approach to watercolour.

His work was first recognised at a national level at age nine through the Royal Agricultural Society in Sydney. Following private tuition and further study, Peter developed an early professional practice, exhibiting and selling his work and undertaking commissions for both private and corporate clients.

His practice spans watercolour, oil and acrylic, with particular recognition for his evocative sepia monochrome watercolours. Originally developed on custom archival paper produced in consultation with Australian papermills, these works have become a defining element of his artistic identity. Their restrained tonal palette, dramatic use of light, expressive detail and considered negative space give the paintings a distinctive visual language that is both recognisably Australian and timeless in character.

An important evolution of this established series is Peter’s development of varnished watercolour paintings on individually prepared rigid panels. This approach preserves the luminosity, tonal subtlety and expressive qualities of traditional watercolour while allowing the finished works to be presented without glass, giving them a physical presence more commonly associated with oil painting.

Central to this development is Peter’s meticulous preparation of the painting surface. Each panel is sealed and treated with carefully applied coats of specialised watercolour ground, subtly tinted with yellow oxide and raw umber pigment by the artist to recreate the natural warmth of traditional unbleached watercolour paper. The grounds are applied in deliberately contrasting layers, creating an irregular, textured tooth that captures and carries the sepia pigment in ways that cannot be precisely replicated.

The resulting interplay between pigment, texture and light introduces a subtle dimensional quality to the paintings, lending each work an individual character and an elemental rawness that reinforces the authenticity of its subject. The surface becomes an integral part of the artistic expression, contributing depth, atmosphere and a sense of presence beyond the image itself.

This development represents a refinement of Peter’s established visual language. The tonal restraint, dramatic light and considered negative space characteristic of his sepia works remain central, while the individually prepared surface introduces a new physical dimension. The result is a cohesive body of work in which a consistent artistic identity is balanced by the distinctive character of each original painting.

A defining feature of Peter’s work is his direct and enduring relationship with the landscapes he paints. For more than two decades, he has owned and worked a significant rural property on the Macquarie River in central western New South Wales. Living within that landscape has given him an intimate understanding of its changing light, seasons, water, weather and agricultural rhythms. That experience is reflected in paintings that are not simply observations of rural Australia, but interpretations informed by living and working within it.

Peter has also travelled extensively through regional Australia and internationally, using those experiences to extend his study of rural landscapes. He spent time working on rural properties in Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana, experiencing first-hand the scale and character of the American agricultural heartland. In Italy, he took time specifically to paint and study the countryside. These contrasting landscapes have influenced his treatment of light, colour, scale and atmosphere while reinforcing the strong connection to land that runs through his work.

Alongside his life on the land and extensive travel, Peter has maintained his artistic practice through ongoing study, commissioned works and painting, continuing to refine the technical and observational foundations of his work.

Following many successful exhibitions, Peter is regularly commissioned to create original works for individuals and corporate clients. His paintings are represented in rural, regional and metropolitan galleries throughout Australia and are held in private and corporate collections in Australia and internationally. Corporate holdings include Elders Limited, which acquired 20 major works.

Peter’s original artworks are complemented by a range of Limited Edition Prints, each personally signed and numbered by the artist. These provide a more accessible way to acquire his work while retaining the provenance and controlled edition associated with the original image.
